This Is A Videogame Icon.

In the 80’s, our agency worked closely with SEGA to design a number of game packages and bring characters to life. One illustration we created was used to launch a video game icon who competed head-to-head with Nintendo’s Mario.

Design the look of a game character to be introduced as Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic had the ability to run supersonic speeds as he tries to stop Doctor Robotnik from taking over the world. But what should this unique little guy look like?

You won’t find this tidbit of information on Wikipedia, but our agency—and famed Disney and Warner Bros. illustrator Greg Wray—created the original Sonic the Hedgehog character and game packaging for his international debut. Since then the Sonic series has sold more than 80 million copies. He’s had his own TV and comic series, was the first game character to appear in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and was inducted into the Walk of Game alongside Nintendo’s Mario and Link.
